"Is Free Speech Alive and Well?"

October 06, 2017

The Knight First Amendment Institute launched "Emerging Threats," a series of essays edited by Columbia Law Professor and visiting scholar David Pozen, which invites leading thinkers to identify and grapple with newly arising or intensifying structural threats to the system of free expression.

Tim Wu, author of the first essay in the series, "Is the First Amendment Obsolete?" joined a debate on the PBS series Third Rail with Ozy to discuss his observations that some forces undermining contemporary political discourse — such as “troll armies,” “flooding,” and propaganda robots — may be beyond the traditional reach of the First Amendment, and his ideas for protecting against coercive political speech.
