Azmat Khan

Azmat Khan is a Pulitzer-winning investigative reporter whose work focuses on the human costs of war. She is the Patty Cadby Birch Assistant Professor at Columbia Journalism School, where she leads the Simon and June Li Center for Global Journalism, and is an investigative reporter at The New York Times Magazine.

Her reporting earned a dozen honors, including the 2022 Pulitzer Prize in International Reporting for “The Civilian Casualty Files,” based on five years of fieldwork in Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan and a legal fight for military records.

Khan’s scholarship on the laws of war and civilian protection appears in the Yale Law Journal and University of Pennsylvania Law Review. Her press freedom work appears in the Columbia Journalism Review and continues through the Li Center, Overseas Press Club, and the Freedom of Press Foundation. She holds an M.St. from Oxford and a B.A. from Michigan.
