Michael S. Roth has served as the 16th president of Wesleyan University since 2007, following his tenure as president of California College of the Arts. Roth has been a professor of history and humanities since 1983 and was the founding director of the Scripps College Humanities Institute. He has authored eight books, including Beyond the University: Why Liberal Education Matters, Safe Enough Spaces: A Pragmatist’s Approach to Inclusion, and The Student: A Short History, all focused on the value and challenges of liberal education. Roth has also curated major exhibitions, including “Sigmund Freud: Conflict and Culture” at the Library of Congress and held leadership roles at the Getty Research Institute.
