Al-Amyn Sumar

Al-Amyn Sumar is currently senior counsel for The New York Times, where he specializes in newsroom issues. Before working permanently with the Times, he was at the law firm of Ballard Spahr, where he represented a variety of media clients around his two stints with us. He previously clerked at the Supreme Court of Canada and the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. In his two previous stays at The Times, he was considered a smart and practical lawyer, a first-rate colleague and a trusted presence in the newsroom. He is a graduate of Harvard Law School and the University of Alberta.
