Brett Max Kaufman

Brett Max Kaufman is a senior staff attorney at the ACLU’s Center for Democracy. He is also an adjunct lecturer at UCLA School of Law, where he instructs the course “Rights, Secrecy, and the Limits of Public Interest Litigation After 9/11.” His litigation focuses on national security, technology, surveillance, privacy, and First Amendment rights, with numerous key cases including ACLU v. Clapper, Doe v. Mattis, and Leaders of a Beautiful Struggle v. Baltimore Police Department.
Prior to his role as an attorney, Kaufman worked at the ACLU as a legal fellow and served as a teaching fellow at the New York University School of Law’s Technology Law & Policy Clinic, where he also taught as an adjunct professor of law until 2022.
