Mohammed R. Mhawish

Mohammed R. Mhawish is an award-winning Palestinian writer and journalist from Gaza City. He is a contributor to The New Yorker and New York Magazine, a Type Media Center Fellow, a Knight Press Freedom Fellow at CUNY’s Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism, and a contributing reporter to the Palestine Reporting Lab. His work has appeared in MSNBC, This American Life, The Nation, and Al Jazeera English. His investigation for New York Magazine documented Gaza’s pervasive surveillance apparatus and how it has reshaped daily life there. He has also reported on the humanitarian crisis, including dangers journalists face covering the conflict. Mhawish has received numerous awards, including the Izzy Award for Outstanding Achievement in Independent Media, the James Aronson Award for Social Justice Journalism, the Neal Conan Prize for Excellence in Journalism, two awards from the Arab and Middle Eastern Journalists Association, and was named 2025 Storyteller of the Year by the Institute for Middle East Understanding.
