Phil Klay

Phil Klay is an award-winning author, essayist, and Marine Corps veteran. After serving as a military officer in Iraq, his short story collection, Redeployment, won the 2014 National Book Award. He has also written the 2020 novel Missionaries and the 2022 essay collection Uncertain Ground. 

Klay’s work examines the experiences of veterans, the moral and political consequences of war, the relationship between military and civilian life, and the challenges of understanding America’s post-9/11 conflicts. Klay’s writing has also appeared in publications including The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Atlantic.
