Steve Coll

Steve Coll is a senior editor at The Economist. Coll is dean emeritus of Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, where he also taught as Henry R. Luce Professor of Journalism. He was the director of the New America Foundation from 2007-2012. 

From 1985-2005, Coll was based at the Washington Post, where he worked as a reporter, foreign correspondent, senior editor, and managing editor. He later joined The New Yorker, where was a staff writer until 2023 and covered international and American politics, national security, intelligence, and the media.

He is the author of five books, including Ghost Wars: The Secret History of the CIA, Afghanistan and The Achilles Trap: Saddam Hussein, the CIA, and the Origins of America’s Invasion of Iraq.

His books and writings have received numerous awards, including two Pulitzer Prizes, an Overseas Press Club Award, the PEN/John Kenneth Galbraith Award for Nonfiction, the National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction.
