Reading Room Document
Olympic Boycott
The document is a memorandum to the President from the Office of the Attorney General, discussing the potential actions to be taken in response to the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow. The conclusions reached in the document include favoring special legislation to prohibit US organizations from participating in the games, blocking transactions between US persons and the Soviet Union related to the games, and promoting alternative games as a demonstration of non-participation. The questions presented for review include whether to send a letter to NBC to prevent further payments for broadcasting the games, using the Export Administration Act to prohibit exports to the Soviet Union, and whether to declare a national emergency to justify certain actions.
