The Knight Institute, the Committee to Protect Journalists, and other press freedom, civil liberties, and international human rights organizations today sent a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland to express concern about the ongoing extradition proceedings relating to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. On Monday, May 20th, a British court is expected to rule on whether Assange is able to appeal his case.

In the letter, the groups argue that recent U.S. assurances that Assange will be able to “‘rely upon’ the First Amendment” if he is extradited to the United States do not adequately address press freedom concerns, and they urge the Department of Justice to drop the charges against Assange.
